Essential Pool Maintenance Tips for Homeowners

Keep your pool in top condition with these essential maintenance tips.

Regular Skimming and Scrubbing

Maintaining a clean pool surface is essential for preventing debris build-up and algae growth. Aim to skim the surface of your pool at least once a week to remove leaves and other floating debris. Scrubbing the sides of your pool will help remove algae and prevent it from staining or taking hold. Use a pool brush for the sides and steps, paying attention to areas with less circulation.

For effective scrubbing, start at the waterline and work your way down. Focus on shaded areas where algae growth is more common. Consider using a robotic pool cleaner for added convenience, as it can handle much of the regular maintenance work by itself, saving you time and effort.

Maintain Proper Water Circulation

Proper water circulation helps distribute chemicals evenly and prevents debris from settling in your pool. Ensure your pool pump and filter are in good working condition and run the pump for at least eight hours a day. Regularly clean the filter according to its type—whether sand, cartridge, or DE—to prevent clogs and maintain efficiency.

Check the skimmer and pump baskets weekly to remove any trapped debris, which will help maintain optimal water flow. Backwashing the filter can also be necessary, especially after heavy pool use or rainfall. Good circulation keeps the water clear, making it more inviting for swimming.

Balancing Pool Chemicals

Keeping your pool's water chemistry balanced is crucial for both safety and comfort. Test the water at least once a week and adjust the chemical levels as needed. The three main levels to monitor are pH, alkalinity, and chlorine. The pH should be between 7.4 and 7.6, while alkalinity should be between 80 and 120 ppm.

Chlorine helps sanitize the pool and should be kept around 1 to 3 ppm. Too much chlorine can cause skin irritation, while too little can allow bacteria growth. Using a pool water testing kit or strips can help ensure accuracy. Tablets, granules, or liquid chemicals can be used to adjust the levels as required.
